JFSA’s Ryan Wood, Chief Program Officer, updates family members on issues impacting residential clients.

JUNE 2026 JFSA is strengthening support and connection for individuals with developmental disabilities through a new IDD Family Forum series for family members and guardians.

The first forum held last April brought together family members, guardians and JFSA staff for an evening of conversation, education and community-building. Longtime resident Don Malitz also gave a presentation titled, “Disability,” offering a personal perspective.

The initiative is led by Mia Buchwald Gelles, who joined JFSA following the merger of Milestones Autism Resources with Lifeworks Autism Services. “Family members and guardians are so busy these days. We want to create a meaningful way for them to come together, learn and feel supported,” she said. “These forums give families a chance to connect with our team, ask questions and build relationships with others in similar situations.”

The May forum, led by Veronica Bellay, Director of Residential Services, educated family members and guardians on how to be prepared for the annual Individual Service Plan meetings with the County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Veronica also shared  what is known about Ohio’s new InterRAI assessment which is being rolled out this summer to measure a individual’s support and care needs help guide service planning and funding.

Future forums will be held about every quarter and cover topics such as STABLE accounts, special needs trusts, and JFSA program that can benefit residential clients and their families.

In addition, Mia’s role at JFSA includes coordination of residential clients who attend Camp Chai, a 5-day camp experience for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. She is also leading process improvement efforts to strengthen efficiency and communication between staff and family members and clients.
