In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, JFSA’s PLAN of Northeast Ohio recently hosted a special arts-centered event at the Kindness Center celebrating the creativity of its members and featuring musical composer and PLAN member Sam Silverman.
“I wanted to give back to JFSA for all they’ve done for me over the years,” said Silverman, who experiences synesthesia, a condition in which sounds are perceived as colors and shapes, influencing both his music and creative work. “PLAN has been so instrumental in helping me return more fully to visual art while continuing to develop my music in a supportive environment.”
The concert was originally his idea, developed in collaboration with PLAN leadership.
The program brought together music and artwork in a collaborative, multi-sensory experience. Silverman performed original piano compositions, including a suite inspired by Chartres Cathedral in France. That piece directly inspired PLAN artists to create stained-glass works in response, which were displayed throughout the space.
According to Becky Rinaldi, Community Activities Administrator of PLAN of Northeast Ohio, the annual May program highlights creativity as a tool for supporting mental wellness. “Every May our goal is to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month with an arts-related event because being creative is good for the brain and the body,” she said. “At PLAN, we focus on creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community where people can be their authentic selves and live full lives. We don’t let diagnoses define who we are.”
A longtime PLAN member, Silverman has been composing since age 13 and has written more than 500 piano pieces.
We’re proud to share more about PLAN and its members creativity in JFSA’s new publication, making our mark. View the inaugural issue here.
