Holocaust survivors laughed away their winter blues with a lively Purim celebration this year. The party was a special event at Cafe Europa, the weekly social program held at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and funded by the Claims Conference. The special program offered good eats and live entertainment for the crowd. JFSA staff had the audience laughing out loud as they performed their Purim play, a delightful version of the Megillah or Book of Esther. Delicious hamentashen was served up after lunch as the group sang along to Purim songs. The celebration also included several rousing games of Purim bingo that had survivors winning fun prizes like sunglasses and orchids.

“Purim is always a fun celebration and it’s great to see everyone smiling and really enjoying themselves,” says Gilda Katz, Coordinator of Special Events for JFSA’s Holocaust Survivor Support Program. “It’s certainly a joy for the staff as well.” Everyone walked away from the eventful afternoon in high spirits. “Our clients always look forward to attending this event,” says Gilda. “It’s a great feeling to know we have brighten their day.”
