At a meeting of Jewish women led by Rabbi M.J. Gries, it was proposed that a personal service society be created. Members of the society would visit poor families to counsel and advise them, forming friendly relationships and put them in the way of helping themselves. Cases needing substantial assistance would be directed to regular charities.
